Delta orders 100 Airbus jets valued at over $12.7 billion

Dec 15, 2017

Delta Air Lines has picked Europe's Airbus over Boeing for a huge order of new jets. Delta said Thursday that it will order 100 Airbus A321neo jets with a sticker price of $12.7 billion and take an option to buy another 100 jets, a deal that Chicago-based Boeing had hoped to land. Financial terms of the order were not disclosed so it isn't known how much Delta will actually pay Airbus. Airlines typically get huge discounts off the sticker price of new planes. Atlanta-based Delta announced the order just before beginning its annual meeting with investors. CEO Ed Bastian told...

4 children killed in bus-train collision in southern France

Dec 15, 2017

PARIS — A regional train hit a school bus on a crossing in southern France on Thursday, killing four children and critically injuring 11 other people on the bus, the French interior ministry said. Photos from the scene tweeted by a local television station showed the train derailed and the bus shorn in half — with first responders gathered around. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, who flew to the scene Thursday night, said authorities still didn't know what led to the accident at the crossing in Millas, some 15 kilometers (9 miles) west of Perpignan, close to the border with Spain....

Health care companies, banks drive lower close for US stocks

Dec 15, 2017

Health care companies and banks drove U.S. stocks lower Thursday, pulling major indexes below their recent highs. The afternoon slide, which erased gains from earlier in the day, came on news that some Republican senators' support for the GOP's proposed tax overhaul bill was faltering. Small-company stocks, which would be among the biggest beneficiaries of the bill's reduction of corporate income tax rates, declined more than the rest of the market. "The market is focused almost completely on the corporate tax reduction," said Quincy Krosby, chief market strategist at Prudential Financial. "And there are still concerns that some of the...

Prosecutor: Not enough evidence yet in Damond shooting

Dec 15, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota prosecutor said he doesn't yet have enough evidence to charge a Minneapolis police officer who killed an unarmed Australian woman this summer, blaming investigators who "haven't done their job." Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman is still deciding whether to charge Officer Mohamed Noor, who shot Justine Ruszczyk Damond in the alley behind her home in July. Damond had called 911 to report a possible sexual assault. As she approached the squad car, Noor fired from the passenger seat, across his partner and through the driver's window. Damond's death sparked protests and led to a police department...

Coast Guard tracks 1,000 icebergs in shipping lanes in 2017

Dec 15, 2017

NEW LONDON, Conn. — About 1,000 icebergs drifted into the North Atlantic shipping lanes this year, marking the fourth consecutive "extreme" ice season, U.S. Coast Guard officials said Thursday. The Connecticut-based Coast Guard International Ice Patrol, which monitors iceberg danger in the North Atlantic and warns ships, held its annual meeting in New London to discuss 2017 and look ahead to 2018. Greenland glaciers are retreating and storms broke up significant amounts of sea ice in 2017, freeing many icebergs, said Cmdr. Kristen Serumgard, who leads the Ice Patrol. She said 1,008 icebergs were detected in the shipping lanes in...
